tumblr.com has grown up!

MaXsiM on 22. February 2009 | Humans go here! | Trolls and Spammers stay out.

I became to be a fan of tumblelogs in the first moment i visited tumblr.com. Roughly said it’s a blogging platform like blogspot.com or wordpress.com, but with a main view on simplicity.

They say tumblr is more a scrapbook than a blog. That’s a pretty good description.

So i wrote a review in June 08 and it was the same simplicity that made me recommend tumblr.

My only problem was (and is) that i still run a lot of sites, fixed pages, this blog, my stumbleupon page and my highly recommendable twitter timeline. And that’s why i didn’t use tumblr.com too much since last June.

Yesterday i finally returned and immediately noticed that the tumblr developers had added many new options in the meantime. And so i asked myself: Is it still the same old tumblr.com with its famous simplicity? Or did it become too geeky, too funny, too big?

Let me tell…

Loads of new features!

It was nice to see that the numerous new features seem to be useful and targeting in the right direction. The developers performed a wonder:

A tumbler has many more options to administer the blog but each and everything still keeps the simplicity!

No matter if you look at your dashboard, the settings, the theme or so-called “Goodies”, everything makes sense and is easy to handle.

Better integration!

There are still some options you won’t need. Just leave them alone then, they don’t stand in your way and get on your nerves.

On the other hand, if you want to post per mobile phone, email or via other stylish ways, you’ll find the rights settings on tumblr.com…

And well, tumblr also goes hand in hand with twitter, which is the next thing i will try out.

Blog or not?

tumblr still is not a typical blog platform. Typical blog features (like comments – which only can be included via an external service or html-coding) are missing. And there is no way to monetize a tumblelog.

Also it isn’t clear how the community works. I didn’t spend much time there but i guess that the community-factor is not the main reason why you use tumblr.

That’s alright for me, just imagine how often do people post comments on small sites? And how much money can you earn with AdSense Banners on a small site?

Why worrying about all that when you can have a comfortable and easy-to-use scrapbook that also looks cool and can be integrated in your twitter stream and other Web 2.0 funmakers easily?

For whom is tumblr.com the right place?

I think the developers of tumblr.com just doing right and so i want to use my tumblelog more often than i did last year.

Maybe for photos that i want to show on twitter. For that you always need external services and i’m going to find out if tumblr is better than Twitpic for example.

Or to post thoughts and ideas or smaller posts that just wouldn’t fit into the main blog mxm-studios.com for some reason.

After all there’s one for sure: Blog-beginners and people who always wanted to start a small website without heavy costs (tumblr is free) and design worries will love tumblr.com.

And people like me who are never getting tired of filling the social web with content and constantly collecting and sharing stuff will also be happy with their tumblelog.

No tricking TOS!

Last not least think about the good reputation of tumblr.com. The policies are against censorship and nobody wants to overtake and own your content like Google and Facebook try on a regular basis.

Of course there are moderators who watch out for illegal content, and also an option to block unwanted tumblelogs. But that’s alright, it shows that they care.

If i will visit and fill my tumblelog very much in the future is still unclear. But for me tumblr.com is one of those Web 2.0-Projects that are really great because developers used their brains.

What is your tumblr-experience? For what do you use your tumblelog? Share it in the comments!
