I know that there’s nothing better than Photoshop. When it comes to photo editing or any kind of graphical work Photoshop is State-Of-The-Art.
But if i could tell one software that’s nearly so good as Adobe’s Premium Application, then it would be “The Gimp”.
The Gimp is not only a function-filled luxury graphic editor, it’s open-source and 100% free, available for everyone without any registration or other bull…
If you have the chance to get Photoshop you can be lucky. If i had the choice between Photoshop and The Gimp i always would take the big one.
But i really do not understand people who buy any other commercial software when there’s “The Gimp” around.
Gimp is a good choice for ambitioned and even professional tasks. It gives you all, from the huge filter library to layers and innovative tools.
Since today you can get the latest version 2.6 for Windows and i recommend the software to everybody who has something to do with graphics and want to do both, save money and work with a powerful tool.
It’s hard to tell you all the new features and differences to v2.4 (2.5 was only a developer version), there are too many.
But what i can say after a short look is that they improved The Gimp in every corner, did a lot for better usability and added no useless make-up (that’s a double-plus).
The Gimp v2.6 keeps cool when i run it on my WinXP Pro, it works stable while i’m having some other applications open… that’s how it should be.
Like i’ve written in the first sentence there is no software that’s better than Photoshop. When you go into detail and really start to dig deep into huge projects you will quickly see the difference between both programs.
Anyway, The Gimp does an excellent job. Especially at home but even in the office or studio. You will get in trouble if you switch over from Photoshop to Gimp, you will note that Gimp works some other way, it’s seems to be more complicated somehow.
But if you are looking for a powerful graphic editor and don’t have enough money for Photoshop then never think of buying another commercial product. It would be a waste of money.
Get a free copy of The Gimp, support the open-source community and better spend your bucks for a new keyboard and mouse, a graphic tablet or the new Alanis Morissette album “Flavors of Entanglement” (sponsor link) which will inspire you much when you create stuff with The Gimp ;)
Everything else you must know about The Gimp 2.6 you will find on the official page www.gimp.org
Happy gimping!
